Water Issues
One of the greatest environmental challenges facing mankind today is maintaining and preserving our limited supply of fresh water. Overuse, wanton waste, contamination and pollution threaten waters across the entire planet. Authorities report that Nebraska's supply of both groundwater and surface water is being dangerously diminished by overuse, mismanagement, contamination and pollution. Pristine waters once abundant in our State continue to diminish at an alarming rate. Listed in this section are a few major sources with links to most recent information regarding specific water issues and incidents. NEAC encourages readers to become more familiar with State water issues which have an enormous impact on Nebraska's social, economic and political future.
The Iowa Environmental Council is working to gain public input for development, adoption and hopefully, strict enforcement of state regulations to significantly increase protection of Iowa state waters. The article advises that, under the federal Clean Water Act, each state is require to comply with policies and procedures which will significantly increase protection of water quality in Iowa.
To date, we at NEAC are not aware of any such efforts afoot in Nebraska's Department of Natural Resources, any of the 23 Natural Resource Districts, or any other government agency within the state.
NEAC members, (as well as other interested parties) are encouraged to contact water management agencies at all levels to determine Nebraska's time-table for compliance with the FCWA requirement. Officials should be encouraged to schedule meetings to gather public input and comments prior to establishment of such regulations relative to water quality in Nebraska.
